Human Potential
A University City
If there is one factor of training which sets Elche apart it is the wide range of higher studies it has to offer, since the city has no less than three universities.
Almost 14,000 university students study in ElcheMiguel Hernández University, which began academic activity in October 1997, has orientated the majority of the degree subjects offered on its Elche campus (16) towards predominantly technical studies. The integration of investigation in the business world being a priority of this institution, allows for a higher level of specialization and professionalization of the productive system. Elche’s campus is situated in a new area of urban expansion close to the centre and has good links with all means of transport. As well as Elche’s campus, where the vice-chancellor’s office can be found and where the majority of curricular programmes are followed, there are three additional campuses in Orihuela, San Juan de Alicante and Altea.
Elche has three universities serving a population of 200,000 inhabitants Cardenal Herrera University, a private university where five degree subjects can be studied, and the Associated University Centre of Distance Learning (UNED) with 28 subjects, complete the offer of university studies. As well as these offers, postgraduate studies provide the opportunity to specialize in foreign trade and other subjects related to the international vocation of Elche’s economy.
Altogether 49 qualifications, including degrees and diploma courses, make up the array of university education on offer in Elche, to which almost 10,000 students have been accepted for the academic year 2004/2005.
