Elche’s population is mostly young
With 215,137 inhabitants (1st of January 2005), Elche is the third largest city in the Valencian Community following Valencia and Alicante. 85% of the population lives in the city itself and the other 15% lives in the rural districts of the extensive municipal area. Population density stands at 650 inhabitants per km2.

This population volume places Elche among the 25 most important Spanish cities, and is similar in size to those of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Oviedo or Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Demographic growth has remained constant for decades. Between 1960 and 1975 there was a staggering increase (the population doubled). This was mainly due to the immigration process linked to the flourishing footwear industry.

The rise in population over the last few years can once again be linked to immigration Elche is among the Spanish cities with the highest registered numbers of foreign immigrants (6,319), which brought the foreign population to 18,666 in January 2005. This fact, along with the tendency of the birth rate to rise (10.2% in the year 2000), shows us that a rejuvenation process is taking place. These figures are reflected in the natural increase rate, which is also very positive (3.8%).

Age group distribution shows the great influence the young generations have. 40.5% of the population is under 29 years old. This factor ensures the availability of human capital for maintaining a high rhythm of economic growth. The population is well balanced in terms of the sexes, since 107,697 (50%) are women.
